Ma’Rijany Hemp Company has completed the reconstruction and started producing test samples of products

The company has transformed an abandoned flax mill in Zhytomyr region into a modern high-tech enterprise for the primary processing of industrial hemp. The plant will produce high-quality fiber for the European textile industry and the domestic market. It will also stimulate the development of the Ukrainian economy and strengthen Ukraine’s export potential.

The importance of this event was emphasized by the visit of high-ranking officials, including Yulia Svyrydenko, First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Dmytro Kysylevskyi, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Development, Vitaliy Bunechko, Head of Zhytomyr Regional State Administration, Tetyana Izovit, Head of Ukrlegprom, and other industry representatives. Their presence demonstrated support and understanding of the strategic importance of the project for the development of Ukraine’s economy.

Why this is an important precedent for the Ukrainian industry

In the 20th century, Ukraine was one of the world’s leaders in the cultivation of industrial hemp, but after the 1990s, the industry virtually disappeared. Ma’Rijany Hemp Company decided to focus on reviving the entire Ukrainian hemp industry, attracting millions of dollars in investments in light industry. The company believes that the restoration of the bast crops industry in Ukraine is a strategic step towards economic independence and sustainable development of the entire Zhytomyr region.

Therefore, in 2023, the company began reconstructing the abandoned Volodarsko-Volynskyi Flax Mill in Zhytomyr region. In 2024, 890 hectares of hemp were sown for further processing, and in 2025, the company increased the area to 1200 hectares. This makes Ma’Rijany Hemp Company a leader both in Ukraine and in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of growing and processing industrial hemp.

Capacity and production of the new plant: figures and facts

Currently, the production facilities of the Phase 1 plant occupy 10,000 m², and the warehouse space is 10,800 m². The total production capacity is about 14,000 tons of trust per year. The production facility has already completed a cycle of construction and commissioning works. The company is also testing the raw materials and making the first product samples for potential customers.

Thanks to an integrated approach, the company has managed to maximize the use of grown raw materials and produce products with high added value:

  • Long fiber for textiles and technical fabrics;
  • Short fiber – for nonwovens, insulation, and paper;
  • Shives – for fireproof concrete, chipboard, bioplastics, and animal bedding.

So far, most of the products are export-oriented. However, the company has plans to return the finished combed yarn to Ukraine to stimulate the development of the national fashion industry.

“The restoration of primary processing of hemp is one of the key elements for the further revival of industrial hemp breeding, which once made Ukraine a powerful player in the global textile market. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of having our own domestic raw materials, as they are the basis of price competitiveness. In addition, industrial hemp is not just a raw material for textiles, but an environmentally friendly and renewable resource for dozens of other industries. And the restoration of the textile chain is only the beginning of the great industrial potential that Ma’rizhany Hemp Company is laying today,” comments Andriy Mykytyv, the company’s CEO.

The potential of Ma’Rijany Industrial Park for the entire industry

The plant is the anchor enterprise of the 30-hectare Ma’rijany Industrial Park. It aims to unite companies specializing in industrial hemp processing and create more than 700 new jobs.

The park is expected to encourage farmers to grow industrial hemp in the Zhytomyr region. As a result contribute to the development of a sustainable industrial hemp ecosystem in Ukraine.

“Ma’Rijany Hemp Company is an example of how investments in the Ukrainian economy are possible even before the war ends. At the same time, the industrial park where the plant has started operating is ready to accommodate enterprises with further processing stages. The creation of such value chains in the country is a priority of the “Made in Ukraine” policy and strengthens our economic self-sufficiency,” said Yulia Svyrydenko, First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy.
